Smart Storage: 5 Self Storage Packing Tips to Save Space, Time and Money
When you’re moving house, renovating, decluttering, or just trying to reclaim some room at home, self storage can be a game changer. But how you pack your unit makes all the difference. A few smart strategies can help you fit more in, keep everything safe, and—best of all—only pay for the space you really need.
Whether you’re storing a few boxes or the contents of an entire house, here are five tried-and-tested tips on how to pack a self storage unit like a pro.
Go Vertical
When floor space is limited, look up. Most storage units have more height than people realise – ours are around 7ft high – and stacking upwards is the best way to make the most of what you’re paying for.
Start with sturdy, heavy boxes at the bottom to create a stable base, and work your way up with lighter items on top. If you’re storing furniture like sofas, armchairs or mattresses, try standing them on their ends if you can, if not then make sure you don`t place heavy items on top of them later.
Use One Box Size
It might sound simple, but choosing one box size wherever possible makes a massive difference. Uniform boxes stack more securely and waste less space between them.
That said, think practically when you’re packing. Use smaller boxes for heavy items like books, tools or kitchenware—no one wants a back injury trying to lift a box of Mary Berry`s Recipe books! Larger boxes are better for lighter, bulkier things like bedding, cushions and clothes and our Long boxes are perfect for bedding and folded clothes.
If you can, label each box clearly and face the labels outward when stacking. That way, you’ll save time hunting for your winter jumpers when the temperature drops.
Plan Your Layout
The temptation is often to just pile things in and shut the door—but a little planning up front will save you loads of hassle later.
Before you start unloading, think about access. If you need to access your belongings frequently then we recommend factoring in an additional 10sqft to your unit size. Leave a narrow walkway down the centre if you can so you can get to the back of the unit without having to remove half your belongings and place items you might need more regularly near the front.
If you are simply storing your things while you go on a world cruise (lucky you!) then getting your things into as small a space as possible is the most cost-effective solution for you.
Fill Your Furniture
You’re already storing that chest of drawers, so why not make it work harder?
Tuck smaller items into drawers, cupboards, and wardrobes. Soft furnishings like towels, bedding and rugs are ideal for filling awkward gaps inside furniture. This is one of the easiest ways to maximise space without adding extra boxes.
And if you’re worried about forgetting what’s hidden inside that wardrobe—just make a quick inventory on your phone or tape a note to the piece of furniture.
Protect your belongings
When placing items into your unit, position larger pieces like furniture and bulky boxes around the edges to keep the centre clear for access. But don’t stack or press things tightly against the walls—leaving a small gap is important to help air to circulate.
Make sure everything going into storage is clean and dry. Drain water from appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, and have rugs professionally cleaned if possible. Leather furniture can be especially sensitive to temperature changes, so vacuum between cushions, use a suitable leather-safe cleaning solution, and cover items with breathable cotton sheets rather than plastic.
Proper prep means your belongings will stay in better condition—and your storage space will stay clean and easy to navigate.
