Totnes
Monday to Friday: 9am–5pm
Saturday: 9am–4pm
Dartmouth
Monday to Friday: 9am–5pm
Reception is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
For emergencies, we also have a 24-hour telephone service on 01803 835777.
What size storage unit do I need?
It isn’t always easy to work out how much space you’ll need, so we’re happy to help.
You can use our online storage calculator, give us a call on 01803 835777, or pop into either of our stores during reception hours. You don’t need an appointment.
Our storage units are around 7ft 8in to 8ft high (2.34m to 2.44m), so there’s plenty of height for stacking boxes and other items. How much space you need will also depend on what you’re storing and how easily it can be stacked.
If you’re not sure, just ask us. We can help you choose a unit that’s right for you.
Are my goods protected?
Yes. All goods stored with us must be protected while they’re in storage.
We offer StoreProtect, which is specifically designed for goods kept in self storage. It provides protection against a wide range of risks that ordinary household insurance may not cover while your belongings are away from home.
The amount of protection you need is based on the full replacement value of everything you’re storing, so it’s important to make sure the value you give us is accurate and kept up to date.
You can arrange your own insurance instead if you prefer, but it must specifically cover your belongings while they are stored in a self storage facility. We’ll need to see proof of that cover before you move in.
For full details of what StoreProtect covers, any exclusions and how claims are handled, please see our StoreProtect Addendum. or speak to our team.
StoreProtect is charged according to the value of the goods you’re storing. As a guide, £1,000 of protection costs £1.20 inc VAT per 4 weeks. Lower rates are available for higher values – please contact us for a quote.

How do I move my things in?
We’ve tried to make moving in as easy as possible.
There’s plenty of parking at both stores and you can bring your vehicle close to the loading area, which makes unloading much easier – particularly when the South Devon weather isn’t on your side!
We also have trolleys, pallet trucks and sack trucks available to help you move heavier or bulkier items.
Both our Totnes and Dartmouth stores have goods lifts, making it easy to move your belongings between floors.
(NB some areas in Dartmouth are not served by the lift and use stair access).
Do I need a padlock?
Yes. You’ll need a padlock for your storage unit.
You keep the key, so only you can access your unit – we don’t hold a copy.
You’re welcome to bring your own suitable padlock, or you can buy one from reception when you move in.
How secure are the storage facilities?
Keeping your belongings secure is very important to us, and both of our stores have a range of security measures in place.
These include:
- 24-hour CCTV throughout the sites, including all corridors
- Individually alarmed storage units
- Fire and smoke alarms throughout the facilities
- Perimeter fencing
- Automatic security gates which close at night
- Security patrols at both sites
We also check the access logs every morning to see who has been on site, and review the CCTV for any unusual activity.
If you’d like to know more about security before you book, just ask our team.
How do I access the facility?
We’ll explain everything you need to know when you book your storage unit.
You’ll receive your own PIN code and full instructions on how to enter and leave the site, and there’s clear signage to help you when you arrive.
You can also download our customer access guides for Dartmouth and Totnes.
When can I access my room?
You can access your storage unit 7 days a week, from 7am until 8pm.
Our external gates close automatically at 8pm, so please make sure you leave yourself enough time to finish up and leave the site before they close.
How long can I rent my storage room for?
Our minimum storage period is just 2 weeks, and after that you can stay for as long as you need.
Storage is charged in 4-week periods, so whether you need a unit for a few weeks, several months or much longer, that’s absolutely fine.
Can I move to a different-sized storage unit?
Of course. If you find you need a little more space – or realise you don’t need quite as much as you thought – speak to our team.
If we have a suitable unit available, we can arrange for you to move to a larger or smaller one at any time during your invoice period.
What can’t I store?
You can store most household and business items with us, but there are a few things we can’t accept.
These include:
- Hazardous or flammable materials, including explosives
- Illegal or unauthorised goods
- Firearms and ammunition
- Plants, animals or any other living things
- Food or anything else that could rot or decompose
- Cars, motorbikes and engines
- Vehicle tyres
- Lithium batteries, including e-bike and e-scooter batteries
- E-scooters
If you’re unsure about something you’d like to store, please ask us first. We’d much rather you check.
How do I pay for my storage?
Storage is charged 4 weeks in advance.
When payment is due, we’ll send you a link to our secure online payment portal. If you have any questions about an invoice or payment, just speak to our team.
What happens if I miss a payment?
If a payment becomes overdue, we’ll send you a reminder and get in touch with you.
If we still haven’t received payment after 7 days, a late payment charge will apply and access to your storage unit will be temporarily suspended, in line with the terms of your storage agreement.
If you’re having a problem making a payment, please talk to us as soon as possible.
How do I give notice when I’m ready to leave?
When you no longer need your storage unit, just give us 2 weeks’ written notice. An email is absolutely fine, or pop into the office and fill out at form.
If your usual 4-week invoice falls due during your notice period, it will still be issued and will need to be paid in full. Once you’ve moved out, we’ll refund any storage charges you’ve paid for the period after your notice ends.
Can I buy packaging from you?
Yes. We sell a range of useful packing and protection products, including boxes, bubble wrap, tape and mattress covers.
We use sustainable packaging options where possible, and you can also order through our click and collect packaging service.
Or simply pop into Dartmouth or Totnes reception and have a look at what we have available.
Do you have a Recommend a Friend scheme?
Yes! If you’re an Indoor Self Storage customer at either Totnes or Dartmouth, you can recommend a friend to our Dartmouth store. When your friend moves into a storage unit at Dartmouth, you’ll both receive £25 credit towards your storage.
Just ask your friend to mention your name when they get in touch with us. The £25 credit will be added to your accounts and can be used towards storage charges. It cannot be exchanged for cash.
