Moving can be a stressful experience for everyone involved, including your furry friends. Pets are sensitive to changes in their environment and can become anxious or distressed during the moving process.
To avoid this from happening and make the transition as smooth as possible, we’d like to share a few tips for moving with pets:
Secure a pet-friendly home
Make sure your new home is pet-friendly by reading any breed restrictions or rules for pets. If you’re renting you need to make sure that you have permission from your landlord to keep pets.
Plan ahead
Start planning your move early and make sure that you have everything you need for your pet. This includes everything from food and water to medications and familiar items like toys and bedding.
Update ID tags
Once you’ve moved, you need to make sure that your pet’s ID tags are up-to-date. This means changing any new contact information in case they get lost during the move.
Familiarise your pet with their carrier
If your pet will be travelling in a carrier or crate, it may help if they are familiar with it ahead of time. This may reduce a lot of their anxiety during the move.
Stick to your pet’s routine
Try and stick to your pet’s normal routine as much as possible. This means feeding, walking, and playing at the times that they’re used to.
Keep your pet safe during transport
Whether your pet is travelling in a carrier or a car, you need to make sure that they are safely secured. This includes never leaving your pet alone in a parked car.
Help your pet adjust to their new home
Once you’ve arrived at your new home, take a bit of time to help your pet adjust. Introduce them to their new surroundings gradually and give them plenty of attention and reassurance.
